Includes collection of official and non-official records documenting all aspects of the Harvard Medical School: administrative, teaching, research, student, and alumni activities; events such as commencement, anniversary celebrations, and conferences; physical plant and property of the school; and relations with affiliated hospitals and other faculties and offices at Harvard. General administrative material includes faculty minutes, 1812-1962; minutes of the Administrative Board of the Faculty Council, 1909-1919, 1935-1940; and of staff meetings, 1956-1960. Included in early records of the medical school are matriculation books, 1826-1908; admission examinations; student certificates and diplomas; tuition records; treasurer's records; student grades; and endowment records. There are also records of various committees. The collection of teaching material includes student handouts, course schedules and announcements, outlines and syllabi, manuscript lecture notes, etc.; and copies of addresses and lectures by faculty members. In addition, there are student reports, themes, and papers, class notes, laboratory procedures and exercises; records about faculty appointments and professorships; and departmental forms and notices. Material about medical school clubs, societies, and other organizations include archival records of the Harvard Medical Alumni Association, Boylston Medical Society, Harvard Medical Society, Aesculapian Club, Boston Society of Medical Sciences, the Medical Exchange Club, Kappa Pi Eta Club, and Harvard Public Health Unit, among others. Types of records include minutes of meetings, correspondence, and financial records of secretary and treasurer, essays and papers presented at meetings, awards, membership lists, scrapbooks, photographs, and memorabilia. Also contains class records relating to activities as a class while in the Medical School, as well as class reunions. Official publications of the school, such as annual reports, dean's reports, catalogs and newsletters, are in the collection, in addition to publications by the faculty, staff, and students. Also contains biographical materials, such as obituaries and tributes, and other information about these individuals; and graduate student theses from the Medical School. There are also related records of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and the Harvard School of Public Health which document relations between the medical school administration and these two schools. Affilialted teaching hospital material depicts relations between the medical school and Massachusetts General Hospital, Children's Hospital, the Boston Lying-In Hospital, the Free Hospital for Women, Beth Israel Hospital, the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, and others.
